Kumrat Valley is located in Upper Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The town of Thal serves as the main gateway to Kumrat. From the Islamabad/Peshawar side, travellers generally make their way through Dir toward Thal before continuing into the valley. PakTrails The journey becomes increasingly adventurous after reaching the valley. The paved-road portion gradually gives way to rougher mountain tracks, and a 4×4 jeep is generally needed for the deeper sections of Kumrat and the routes toward higher attractions. PakTrails This is one of the reasons Kumrat feels different from more developed tourist destinations. You don't simply park beside every attraction.

The defining feature of Kumrat is its forest-and-river landscape. Tall deodar trees cover large portions of the valley while the Panjkora River cuts through the landscape. The combination creates a cool, green environment that feels dramatically different from Pakistan's more open mountain destinations. PakTrails For photographers, this combination is particularly special. You can frame:
The scenery also changes considerably as you move higher. The lower valley is primarily about forest, river and waterfalls. The upper areas gradually introduce meadows, rocky slopes and alpine landscapes. And eventually, the journey toward Katora Lake becomes a proper high-altitude trekking experience.
